This sounds suspiciously like the problems that HP is admitting to in their free repair of dv6000 series systems. See if this link describes the problem your having (I think it does) and if it does contact HP and see if they will repair it for free.

Chances are they will claim it's out of the extended warranty period (that's the answer they gave to my client who had a bad HP dv6000 series).
