If it is broken, check to see if any [local companies are better] game retailers offer to fix the broken device, if not, you're out of luck. If the hardware is recognized, it might either be that your computer is recognizing the fact that something has just been plugged in to its USB slot, or that your console's USB is broken (unlikely). If it comes to buying a new controller, I would recommend buying the optional wired controller (where it can be wireless or wired), which should only cost you an extra 10 dollars.
